Default gear selector- p0706

Alright been getting the transmission fault error with code p0706.

seen a few post but while symptoms are similar, there were differences plus seemed to trailed off on if it worked or not.

while the other posts reported it happens from d to 4. Mine happens from park or reverse. Now if I go straight to drive or restart in neutral and go to drive, no error and drive normal and going from d to 4 or three and the likes does not set the error. And error or not, cruise control still works.

Few differences. At start up, P is flickering or sometimes the D or N is illuminated instead of park. The care is solidly in park, and starts up only in P or neutral as it should, no play excessive play in the gear shift and other wise (when fault dont occur) it goes into the proper gear like normal. Even when fault occur it enters park, neutral, reverse, and drive like normal and precisely.

Now here is another difference, now I figured something is going on between park and reverse. Like If I slowly try and shift to reverse, the illumination indicator skips reverse and illuminate neutral. Then when hit reverse, the R will flash briefly then the error sets in and none of the indicator lights operate and restricted performance/4th gear "safety" thing happens.

now the question is has anyone experienced this and found out what was the problem is?

From what I gather and seen it's either the rotary switch on the transmission, or the cable out of adjustment. But so far no reports if this ever solved any of these issues and thus checking to see if it has by chance.

Sounds similar to S-Types and yes those items are the usual causes and fixes, along with a new shifter cable if stretched.

found and fixed the issue. The wires going to the TCM have been mis-routed during the last engine replacement placing them too close to the cat converter and over time drapped closer and closer to it until it was resting on top of it. Looks like I caught it in time (and luckily do not do too much heavy driving in this car) Moved them and worked like a charm thus far. Although may be too late for the wire for the right O2 heater circuit wire. Going to take closer look at it and see if it can be soldered until I find replacement or leave it as is and wait. So far it goes into closed loop like normal and runs fine just got heater circuit code now for right bank. Going to compare the patterns to see the effect of it on the o-scope.

thus in short, if someone is having this issue, and had recent major work, look at the routing of the wiring to the TCM/ECM box. Someone might have not put them in their original areas and exposing the wires to some extra heat.

Default PO706 but different

Hi All,

I just picked up yesterday a 2001 2.5 auto x type at auction. I stupidly didn't even look at it but fancied trying one out for a while.

Unfortunately it's a bit sick. Several fairly major issues but worse is the gear box. It seems fine if you take it easy but if you apply a bit more gas the revs shoot up and gearbox warning shows up. Diagnostics shows PO706, PO734 and PO735.
I took the j gate apart and cleaned out some dust etc .. Reset it and tried again ... This time it took a bit longer but went after5 mins .. Again high revs and no noticeable increase in speed.
However it was only when I slid it to 4th the gearbox warning light came on. Soon after engine management light too.
I have researched all over the web and their seems several possibilities.
I am after some alive on what to do first. Change the j gate? The rotary switch on the gearbox or the cable?
Does the combination of codes I have point to something more likely than other?

Many thanks
Paul

Hello BlackWolf560.

Just a simple follow-up from your post of Jan 2012. Did the wiring fix continue to work months later?

Thank you for your reply.

Very respectfully,
Bob G.
