I need to top up the fluid in my gearbox, because it's now been established A. Moron has been at it previously. Further evidence is below:

Yeehaw....oh heck, a 9mm allen will work just as well as a 10mm.

That bites....I don't know if that's the size, just throwing a number out there regarding redneck mentality ...or as you state A. Moron. There are people who do not deserve to own a car.

Did you get it out?

No. I stopped trying after realising what a mess it is. Access to that as you may know is extremely tight.

its going to a Jaguar specialist next week anyway for a full gearbox service, I was just seeing if I could make it drivable in the mean time by topping it up according to the procedure.

they can deal with it!!

Sometimes you just have to do things the hard way.

I had one like that on one of my cars. I took a chisel and at a 90°angle I put a cut in it. Then put the chisel in that cut at about a 45° angle. Then hit the chisel until it broke loose. The plug will need to be replaced.

Damn. Bob beat me by 5 minutes. Do I get credit for being in a later time zone?😁

Holy cow!!....there really are some dumb ***** out there....I had to deal with this on my box.
I used a six point large Torx bit...can't remember what size...FB ;o))....hammered it in on a long extension
and used a long breaker bar to loosen it after apply a little heat tot he surround area....CRACK!!....it came loose!
The new plug went back in with a little Nickel ant-seize on the threads....and was torqued to 30Nm.

Tough crowd here.

How many people have never rounded-off a fastener or cross-threaded a bolt? Never made a mistake?

Show of hands, please.

Cheers

I took a plug out of a transmission and this is what will fit.

8mm allen- This is what I normally use

5/16" allen

T-50 torx

A cold chisel if you don't have one of these other tools of if is stripped. "NOT RECOMMENDED "

Maybe not on an X308 but, other jags I would have much better luck by removing the transmission aluminum bracket so the tail shaft would hang down for more accessibility. Back in late 2013 when we got my wife’s 00’ XJ8 from the original owner with 21k miles on it, I did a transmission service on it and that fill plug was as tight as can be. It had never been messed with before then either. I had to use a
Snap-On 8mm Allen socket in a 3/8” drive to bust it loose. ZF really should’ve used Loctite 271 red if they intended to never have that open again.

‘ I figure I broke everything that there was to break or screwed up at least once and then try working with all this brittle plastic on these 20-year-old cars. It’s that plug me in a welder is where I would’ve started .and then a new plug..
