Glove Box Won't Open
My '98 xj8 the glove box will not open. I thought it was in valet mode. Put key in and turn to the left. It will turn left in the cylinder but not open it. The handle will not even pull out. I don't know if my wife has too much crap in the box and has it jammed or if the mechanism is broke.
How do I get it open or remove the glove box? Any ideas except a sledge hammer are appreciated.

The glove box is secured by two spring loaded metal "plugs" that move along the horizontal plane and lock into slots when the glove box is closed. Pulling the handle withdraws these plugs together, thereby releasing the glove box. So I think you can discount the glove box being too full and jamming the operation.
As you indicate that the handle will not release I'm suspecting maybe the key locking/unlocking mechanism is stuck.
To lock the glove box the ignition key has to be turned 45 degrees clockwise.
But, to unlock the glove box the ignition key has to be turned past 45 degrees counter clockwise........about 70 degrees......before the handle is free to be pulled out. So, first check that you are able to actually turn the key a full 70 degrees counterclockwise to release the locking mechanism. If not.....maybe spray some WD40 or silicone spray in the keyhole?

CK has it right on how it works. The one time I had the issue, it was just one post that would not withdraw with the handle pull. Long ago, but I think I used a small, thin PC screwdriver to grab it . . . since you have so many in the driveway, maybe check one of the boxes out to see what kind of access you can get . . .

My wife got it to finally open. She kept working the key and it finally opened. I think the keys maybe worn. We sometimes have trouble with the ignition and the door. I guess I will need one cut from a Jaguar dealer where he can cut a new one from the VIN number.
