Default GPS placement for California

Just got a Magellan GPS for Xmas.
It seems that there is a CA law that directs the placement of these devices to either lower corner of the windshield.
I want mine in the middle lower windshield area so that the passenger can play with it too.
What are people's experience with mounting these things other than using the windshield mount?
I have seen mounts that fit into the vents. Not sure if this works well.
Thanks again,

Dan

I have a ProClip for my TomTom - works great, can be angled for passenger (no affiliation, etc). A bit pricey, but worth it, IMHO

I picked up a small piece of 1/4" Plexiglas from my local ACE hardware and made something that looks like an audio cassette cartridge on one end and the mounting suction cup on the other. Added a bar of the plastic to keep the device from going too far in the player.

Inserted into the cassette player it provides a sturdy low mount with no signs of its attachment. And you don't have to look at it with the background of bright outside light. Plus it transfers from vehicle to vehicle . . . if all your cars are old like mine.

Cost a dollar.
