Default Hard downshift when braking

I tried a few searches to no avail, so I will post a question. Yesterday my '00 VDP has a jerk when it is downshifting through one of the gears. This occurs under brake or coasting as the vehicle is slowing to a stop. approx 30 mph. Just one tug. Need to be in at least fourth gear for this to occur. It accelerates and upshifts just fine. No other issues noticed, no warning lights. Any ideas?

Thx,

Sean S.

(The car's name is Oliver.)

Update: Trans is now slipping in gear from a stop. Time to take it in I guess. Anyone else had any issues like this?

Hi Sean,

I don't believe your X308 has a transmission fluid dip stick, so the first thing I would do is to raise the car and check for any obvious transmission fluid leaks that could lead to low fluid in the gearbox. Also check to ensure the bracket that secures the cable to the rotary switch on the side of the gearbox is secure, and clean the electrical connector with zero-residue electrical contact cleaner spray.

Next, I would have the car scanned for any stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Transmission issues can be caused by CAN network problems and other non-mechanical problems.

Beyond that, there are some relatively common issues with the ZF 5HP24 gearbox, some of which are not too expensive to rectify.

Hopefully some of our X308 experts will provide additional suggestions.

Cheers,

Don

Check the fluid or it could be an "A" drum failure in the tranny.

Try searching the forum for more info on this common tranny fault and how to check your fluid level.

It is caused by a faulty valve in the tranny, but ruins the A drum.

Can be prevented by replacing the valve, but not if the A drum is already broken.
