Hello. Is there a step by step to replacing the head gaskets on a 98 v8 sovereign? Thanks

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X308 forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

The first place to start is to go to the "HOW-TO" section and download the JTIS to your computer. It is the tech manual system for repairs. You will need it for the timing procedures and for torque values and procedures.
Your going to need the special tools for TIMING and the special tools for removing the HARMONIC BALANCER.
If you use the search tool at the top ribbon on the x308 page and use the advance search function for the x308 you can get details on removing the components from different threads. You can also search the XK8 forum as they use the same engine.
I remember from another post that the head bolts are a one time use and have to be replaced. They are torque to yield. If you search also for head gasket recommendations you will get the part numbers for the metal MLS head gaskets. They seem to be the one everyone recommends.
Hopefully a few others will chime in with recommended part numbers and tips.

I found the MLS gaskets and bolts were cheaper for the land rover equivalent 4.2 engine. The bolt heads however are a size 10 RIBE drive. Much more positive torque than the 13mm originals.

I use a breaker bar with a 5' piece if pipe over it to break bolt loose. I have the proper kit to remove crank pulley. I would do a search for other members methods of removing the crank pulley without the kit.

Got the bolt off no problem but the pully is stuck fast. I will try and fabricate a pully puller. Thanks bob

I had pretty good luck using an ordinary harbor freight pulley puller, just be sure to stick several washers under the stationary bolts or they can pull through the puller plate. After you move the crank pulley out a few mm you can give it some good knocks around with a hammer to vibrate it loose and it should just come right off. This is the procedure in JTIS and lots of forum guides here too.

Why not just read TSB 303-10 and follow the instructions???
Jaguar already gives you 'how-to'.

All this info is here in the large file area.

When you can't find something do a search. I copied it for you by doing a search.

$100 for 2 head gaskets
$60 for 20 head bolts
$250 for primary/secondary chain tensioner kit
$50 for front cover and crank seal
May need manifold seals, although exhaust can remain on, still need manifold to pipe seal, $6
