Why do you need to do this?

Im gettin gear box fault n trans range sensor code...im having to play with gear selector to go into drive properly...somtimes it feels like it starts in 4th gear...it feels lke it doesnt engagw park fully...but once I shut off n restart car the message goes away and it runs normal. Trans was rebuilt minus the sensor...my only thoughts were the sensor, tcm, or a drum in the gear box

Is that a ZF5HP24 transmission? If it is you can make an adjustment on the cable and if that is not the problem then you have a selector switch mounted on the right side of the transmission but that is a bit pricey.

the adjustment is with the cable mounting under the centre console. Remove this, slacken the two big ring nuts a little, it doesn't need much, and move the selector through it's full range. Easy to do with the car running on stands at the rear. Button back up once it feels right, no errors etc. Can be done in under 1 hour....
Hope that helps.

I am looking for the procedure for the cable adjustment. I recently did my xk8 and this is that procedure but I am not sure it is the same for your car.

This link is for XK8/R Not XJ http://jagrepair.com/images/TSB/307-01-1.pdf

When I find it for your car I will post it.
