I think my current thought train has me using a fold out single din, de-mating the screen and putting the unit behind the screen. This seems like the most compact path so far as I dont have to run anything to the trunk and it sill still appear a single screen unit.

The other though is redoing the entire center area and moving things around to a full custom setup to handle a double din. I think I have passed on the remote unit at this point.

http://www.parrot.com/pdf/files/car/...d-smart/en.pdf

PDF shows it as 7 x 3.93 x 4.49’’

here is mfg website http://www.parrot.com/usa/products/a...asteroid-smart

and a nice array of inputs, while it has no physical buttons it can integrate to steering wheel controls. I think this is the unit for me.

Hmmm…maybe the dimensions Amazon was providing were the box dimensions.

Very nice find!

Would definitely be keen to find out how you get on with this.
It looks like you will still run into issues with the top of the unit not clearing the metal brace behind the centre console, but this can be trimmed down, but hopefully it is shallow enough that it doesn't hit the airbag sensor

@Probesport, I am definitely also very curious to know how you're getting on with this install... Good luck!

That's for a single DIN unit however.

Just wondering if you've had any progress with this?
I found a local store that has the Parrot unit on display, and had a quick play with it over the weekend. It was very impressive

They had another one in a box out the back, which they kindly opened up for me so we could see exactly how big it is. It's definitely still going to hit things, but nowhere nearly as badly as a full depth unit.

Hopefully in the next week or so I will take my headunit out and have a proper look. It's been a long time since I've had it apart, but it will remind me exactly how much (ie little) room there is in there

was a pain in the *** - cutting, welding and modifying everything in the centre of the dash, but a 2 din 7" screen fits a 1998 XJR

I've changed my plan up a bit. Since it's getting wintry around here it's time to do some work.

I am going to be putting in a Sony MEX-BT4100P with an Axxess ASWC-1 for steering wheel controls and it will all be behind a Nexus 7 tablet for main controls.

I just ordered everything today so I will start a build thread when I get things moving.

Default double din

I have a 1999 xj8 and i was wondering what material u used for that black pin stripe look. And also how long did it take you to put the double din in. I was thinking about putting the double din in but i see its kind of trick, i dont know if i should just dive in or not. Any answers and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

It's carbon fibre vinyl. Not actual carbon fibre, but just a print.
Have a search through this, and the audio section of the forum. I think I can count the number of people who have successfully fit a double din unit on one hand. It's definitely possible, but not for the faint of heart.

There is a metal bracket and air bag sensor that need to be relocated before a double din will fit.

These guys have done it as well.
Multi-Media
Check the second page of pictures.
I emailed them years ago and they were able to provide a couple of pics of the headunit install in progress. Sadly I've now lost them, and haven't bothered trying to find them again as I've all but given up on getting a double din unit in.

Given that you're in the States, and have access to satellite radio etc, why not look at putting a tablet in there instead? You can pick them up really cheap, then run an external DSP, a couple of amps, and you'll be away laughing

Hi,
the dash part of the job was around 15 - 20 hours,
there is huge amounts of mods to be done, the console panel is a piece of alloy, that I cut to suit and bent, then covered it in fake carbon fibre, looks good in real life.
the Upper vent needs to be trimmed about 20mm I remade it from 1.6mm alloy and sealed it with Sikaflex, You need to fabricate a replacement cross member at the bottom. It turned out OK and looks professional - but it could quite easily have turned into a dogs breakfast.
You can see by the second pic there is only about 2mm between heater controls and the head unit,

Slightly unrelated... but if anyone has a premium headunit they want to get rid of/sell, I would be very keen

Need the premium unit as it has line level outputs, rather than speaker level outputs

Have you got the Jag/Alpine amp? You'll need that too.

I'm 99% sure that I don't. The wiring diagram shows there being 6 wires that go from the premium headunit to the amp, 5 inputs and a common ground. This would suggest 4 speakers channels, a remote/on signal, and the ground.

It's not the same as the XK's, where it's all controlled via ai-net. The XJ's should just be line level out, which I can convert to RCAs and input directly into my processor

Default tablet for head unit

Any idea of what i would need to make a tablet a head unit. I havr looked into it a little bit and it seems easier than putting in a double din. The thing is im new to this so i dont really know what i need to get it connected. I would like to install it myself. If anyone knows how this is done and can walk me through it that would be great. I have a 1999 XJ8
