Default How to remove grille slats from grille surround

Hi there

I thought I was pretty good with car mechanics (just changed heater pump in 45 minutes) but I can't for the life of me see ths screws holding the grille slats into the grille surround. (XJ8 4.0 1999)

Can anybody point me to the right location of the slat screws. I cannot remove the star screws holding the grille surround as they are behind the slats

Thanks for any replies

Gary

Gary,
I don't understand. Unless you have after market grill & slats. My torx screws are located between the 1st & 2nd slat inboard from outer edge and can be gotten at carefully. Hummmm...

I took mine out by pulling up and out... the slats don't screw in, they snap in. They have snaps at the top and tangs at the bottom.

Gentlemen, thanks for your replies I think I will try the "snap out" option sometime in the next few days as that is the 2nd time someone has told me about this

I will let you know how I get on

Mines have 2 bolts on each half,in the upper part, about one inch form the corner of the insert. It's a normal XJ8, and I also have one grille from a XJR with the same fitting. Probably it's for the later models only.

Mine pops in and pops out. Like Ian said, there are tangs on the bottom that fit into slots in the surround. The top is a push in fit. My car is a VDP, but I would think it's the same. This is referring to the two grille vanes that fit in the surround.

Gentlemen, thanks for all your replies.

I gently prised the top of the grille inserts about a quater/third the way in from both ends to release, rotated the top of the insert forward and pulled up to remove the bottom two tags.

Job done.

Exceptional! Thanks for the "thanks"... I feel like a forum expert now. And yes I actually pried it out by accident the first time I messed with the grill.
