It's an 02 XJR. Does that mean there's a leak somewhere? There is no oil on the garage floor.

 

The most likely culprit is the cam cover gasket near the rear of the engine leaking and dripping oil on the catalytic converter.

 

+1....also, be sure to check the breather tube between the cam cover and the air filter for blockage. If its built up enough, it can smell.

I believe this is what highorse more or less was referring to. It’s located on the same side as the oil filler cap. The part load breather is the side that can get clogged up so bad that I’ve seen air filters soaked with engine oil because the PL breather was nonfunctional and it would get sucked out thru the full load breather going from the valve cover to the air intake tube when it’s supposed to be flowing out of the PL breather. A clogged PL breather will also cause excessive pressure inside the engine and cause oil leaks.

I found out the valve cover gaskets are leaking so they are getting replaced.

 

from my (bad)experience, is always on the left side

also make sure if you need to replace the bolt and nuts

 

The left is usually first to leak because as Highhorse said the Part Load Breather plugs and causes crankcase pressure in the cam cover. Unless you find the cam cover cracked, the most likely cause of the leak is the breather.
