Hi all,

My mirror autodim went bad (second mirror) on my 01 XJR. This mirror has auto-headlights and rain sensing besides the autodim. I was wondering if anyone has substituted a later model mirror, with compass, in a car like mine.

I was told, rather glibly, that they were incompatible but I wonder if they really are or if it's just a question of different connectors. I believe the compass is integral to the mirror.

Any electrical wizards out there ever do this?

I tried to find a replacement mirror a long time go, I ended up buying a used one.
I was told that an Acura rear mirror was a replacement unit (same supplier)

There is a company that sells replacements for somewhere around $75, if I recall. Simply do a search from within the forum on 'mirror' and you will find many references.

There is no other mirror that is compatible - the sensors in the stock mirror are unique to this model car.

 

Thanks. I'll probably send it to Sybesma's for an exchange. Seems cheapest and most reliable way to go. Sure would've liked the newer mirror though.

I investigated this upgrade mirror possibility a couple of years ago because I wanted a mirror with compass. After checking with our Jag dealer and my trusted independent Jag mechanic (also getting valuable information on this Forum) I concluded that it is
not feasible to retrofit the newer Jag mirror. The electronics are just too different.The most practical advice I got: Forget about an upgrade and buy an $80.00 hand-held GPS unit.
