Default 89 xjs dash and hazard bulb replacements

Need a source and part for the replacement and upgrade:

5w for the four hazard bulbs

5w or ?? for the 17 instrument panel bulbs... if color available then 7 red, 3 green, 6 yellow and 1 blue

5w or ?? for the 5 bulbs in the instrument cluster.

There have been many posts for bulbs but can't seem to find the parts numbers or source for the three different types. Will use LED bulbs also if not too difficult to modify.

Thanks

Hi Ken,

Your post reminded me to look up my receipts and find the bulbs I used on my '90.

I bought all of my bulbs from; https://www.superbrightleds.com/

For all of the 17 small indicator bulbs (turn signals, warning lights etc.) I used bulb #74-WHP.
https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...#/attributes/1

These are "Cool White" bulbs and are much brighter than the original incandescent bulbs. The "Cool White" color does alter the turn signal color a bit, going from green to a green-blue appearance but for me it is ok. If you really want the turn signals to stay green then order the #74-GHP.

For the 5 Instrument Cluster back-lights I used bulb #WLED-NW6.

The other bulb I bought was the BA9S-WHP9.

This bulb is used for the fiber optics that illuminate the dash lighting for the AC controls. Again, this bulb is much brighter than the original incandescent bulb.

All of these bulbs worked well for me. The only trick you need to be aware of is that these bulbs are sensitive to polarity. They must be oriented in the correct position to function. Make sure you test the dash before you re-install it into the car. If a bulb does not work then flip it over to reverse the polarity.

When I get time I will test the polarity of the dash bulbs and post a photo showing the polarity of each bulb position.

Mark,

Thanks... Exactly what I was looking for. Questions... Since they have all of the different bulbs mentioned in colors, would you go with the correct colors rather than the cool white 74 LED ?? Same for the four push hazards BA9 ?? I understand that the 5 194 LED need to be the cool white.

Hi Ken I also bought superbright leds and they are greatquality. I replaced the 5 dial bulbswith green G4 -90s and all the warning lights. I ended up swapping the blue high beam light back out for the original becauseI found the light too bright at night.

While you at it do the centre console, I did the lighter witha green mini bayonet and the gear selector light with a green led and removedthe old blackened green strip.

I also put a white 120lum led in the fibre optic optical andnow have wonderfully illuminated dash items like ignition, lights and airconcontrols.

For me the Cool White bulbs worked fine for most of the warning lights but they do change the tint of the Green and Yellow indicators.

I am about to order another set of bulbs for one of my '89 cars. This time I will buy 2 Green LED's for the turn signal indicators and Yellow LED's for the indicators that should be yellow.

Here is something to consider regarding the back-lighting;

If you open your instrument cluster and remove the gauges you will see five dome-shaped green lenses. If the lenses are in good condition you should be able to see through them. Many however have become blackened due to bulb heat and age.

If your lenses are good then use White LED's for the back-lighting. If the green lenses are dark then remove them and install Green LED's.
