Cool Jag Princess 1 2000 XJ8

2000 XJ8 89thousand miles serviced on regular schedule plus pampered. The transmission fault light came on car was running great prior. Light came on again half hour later and now it started slipping. I had it checked. They checked codes and looked at trans oil. I was told no codes fluid looks good. Trans needs rebuild cost 1800.00. I know that every time my sensors on my wheels get any dust traction control and abs come on are these not in code history? I had planned on trans fluid change and then rebuild if it looked bad on draining. Finally my question does this sound like the mechanic knows what he is doing?

Most code readers will not read Jag C codes which are used for the ABS module.

If the shop knows the proper procedure for checking the fluid level have them do that. If they don't know probably best choice is find another shop.

Not all code readers can read transmission faults, either, but if the A drum is failing or the valve body is cracked or worn there may not be a fault code stored.

If he is going to replace the A drum and valve body and change the filter and fluid for $1800, parts and labor, sounds like a good deal.

Yes, that is a good deal. But when they get it apart they may find the valve body has worn bores or other issues. In which case the the quoted price goes out the window.

Or worse, they don't even look for other problems.

Where are you taking it?

I'm in Santa Clarita - I see you're in Pine Mountain club! I've been up there a few times, friend of mine has a cabin.

Doug,
I haven't decided where I'm taking it yet. Do you know of a good place out by you?

I had the transmission in my '99 C230 Kompressor rebuilt by 'The Transmission Man' - in Santa Clarita (I linked it below).

I interviewed several shops around town before I picked him, as i'm extremely particular about people who work on my car. I generally do everything myself, but I wanted a warranty for a trans re-build. They did a great job and were very knowledgeable about non-standard cars.
