locking the xj8 is becoming more of a problem, having to stand nearer and nearer the car. cells in the remotes have been changed, but still makes no difference, maybe this is a transducer problem???

Welcome to the forum Alan!
There have been discussions on the antenna connection to the Security Locking Module causing problems. Thankfully, few failures of the module itself.
It is located under the fuse panel in the boot.
Try a search to bring up one or more of the threads.

Also check the circuit board on the remote itself, where the buttons press against the board. Use some electronics cleaner or alcohol and wipe down both the board and back of rubber buttons. You might find a blackend film on it . . . .
