Today while driving around in 113 degree temp my car over heated. Yes I had the AC on.
Have never had an issue before. Pulled over right away. Raising the hood, some water was
spraying from the coolant recovery tank. Also I noticed none of the fans on. I just got the car
back home and sometime tomorrow I will start the process of checking it out. I found the tank
on Rock auto. Will probably change out both hoses and thermostat too.Couple questions.
I) What thermostat temp is factory?
I've seen 185, 183, and 170.
2) Besides fuses where and what relays should I check for the fans not coming on?
I will check the fans too.
3) Is/where is the sensor to turn the fans on?
4) What temp should the fans be coming on?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cooling fans turn on at low speed at 205 degrees. If it brings the temp down to 194, they turn off. AC on cold, they should both be on at all times, unless it's cold outside.
High speed cooling fans come on at 220. Brings them back to low speed at 212. Fahrenheit.
I believe factory thermostat is 185.
First I would check to see if the fans come on at all.

Thanks. They did work last night. But I didn't hear them today. That will be one of the things I check.
I will start with fuses and relays and then the actual fans. Anything else? Some sort of sensor to turn them on?
Any help locating those also much appreciated.

No separate sensor/switch for the fans, they are controlled by the ECM based on the coolant temperature. The ECM switches the special triple relay module (low down at the front left corner of the engine compartment) which engages the fans in low or high speeds. According to the service manual, the switching points are:
I would first check the fan fuses and, if good, the fans themselves by connection to an external battery.
I found a few interesting DTCs while looking through the attached chart. The chart is for MY2001, but maybe the same codes apply to the 2000, too. The codes are P0480 and P0482 on page 31 and can only be read with a Jag tool, or maybe an "all systems" type code reader. The "Possible Causes" column lists pretty much what you're looking at; however, I would also suggest cleaning all of the connectors while you're in there, including the connector to the fan control module. I know that I say "clean the connectors" a lot on this forum, but it does work most of the time. I had a constant P1121 code a few months ago, with having to reset for the CEL four times on a 50-mile drive. That code puts the car in limp home mode, so I had to pull over on the interstate to do the reset. I cleaned the PPS connector and haven't seen that code since.
