Manual Shifting
Hi All- Just wondering if shifting is worse for the transmission, seems would be fun to do now and then, but think it might wear it out faster. They say there is no stupid questions...however they say nothing about the author of such questions. LOL
I did it all the time with my six speed Land Rovers. Not so much with the XJ8 (J gate makes it tougher). But, if in town, I do not run it in drive, instead keep it in fourth gear to preclude it going into fifth between stop lights -- read somewhere (in this forum) that it reduced wear and tear on the torque converter. Made sense.
Its funny, I used to manually shift my first car, a 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass all of the time, and loved letting the car slow through downshifting.
But, for some reason, I've never really bothered on the Jag. I often keep it in sport mode and I suppose it holds the gears long enough for my liking so I never really found the need, and part of me thinks the computer is better at shifting as the whole human error of untimely downshifting or holding gears too long would be avoided.

You are not going to hurt the transmission -- or the TC. The MB box will drop down to 1st in "S" ...otherwise it starts out in 2nd.
The sport mode does not do much.
The MB box is rather nice ... The "J" gate is an engineering mystery ... strange design ... never use it.

In some twisted way, actually makes sense: one row for normal slushbox operation...pull it towards you (or push away if you are RHD) and then select the cog you want.
I just leave in D, normal. Engage sport when entering the superslab on an entrance ramp to move the shift points higher for more 'sprightly' acceleration...works real well.
