My 2001 XJ8 won't start or run unless the MAF sensor is unplugged. Do I need a new sensor or could it be almost anything?

Double check the wiring, to make sure something isn't shorted or broken. I had an issue that way when I accidentally pinched the harness in the darkened garage when I replaced my upper shock mount.
