Default May be a silly question, but need to ask

I have a 2003 Vanden Plas and since my XJS is back on the road I thought I get some things down on the car. Question is, if the car is a Base 308 does it have a EGR valve, or does the Purge Valve replace that. Reason for question is I get the restricted performance code, code reader comes up with running lean on both banks, Besides checking over the other probabilities, just want to know if there is a EGR valve and its location.

Work done so far, new valve cover gaskets (needed, had a slight leak) plugs, and doing all the brakes and rotors. since the car will be up on the stands, might as well get the oil changed. along with the rest of the routine maintenance.

I know the Supercharged cars have one, couple of things you need to know about checking if your car has one.
Remove the intake 'snorkel' and have a look at your exhaust manifold - if the car is equipped with an EGR valve there will be a pipe bolted to the manifold and goes to the base of the throttle body. The opening at the TB can get coked up so removing the TB and giving it a clean out - then carry out a hard reset.
Hope that helps

Hi,
yes, the EGR is supposed to be fitted for AJ26 SC and AJ27 SC engines only.

Extract from AJ-V8 engine management course:
EGR lowers combustion temperature, which in turn
reduces NOx exhaust emission. EGR is controlled by
the ECM from a map that factors engine operating conditions
such as engine load and speed, throttle position,
and coolant temperature.
OT info: Apparently early '97 AJ26 N/A XK8's had EGR fitted too - but it was deleted during the same model year.

The purge valve = evaporative emission control valve has an entirely different task: it allows fuel vapors from the fuel tank being purged from the evaporative canisters into the intake manifold.

In conclusion: EGR is SC only, purge valve is for all x308

The VVT is supposed to help with emissions. Valve overlap is used in the Normally Aspirated engines.
