Default Need help diagnosing steering column adustment

Today I parked my XJR at work, and the steering wheel tilted up and away per usual.

When I got in to go home, the wheel won't move.

The seat still moves back for egress and forward as it should.

The steering wheel won't move up, down, in, or out.

When I move the control button to move the button up, down, back, or forward, I can hear a little "click" sound coming from the dash, near the glove box door.

I have read MANY threads regarding faults on our steering columns, but I could not find one that described my exact problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

There are two significant issues with the tilt/reach system in our cars. The rheostats position location sensors get old and do not provide correct information to the seat system, and the tilt/reach motor's cable connection to the movement gearing fails.

Another problem, with the onset of cold weather is that the 10+ year old grease in the mechanism gets too firm to allow correct movement.

Exercise the movement of both tilt/reach with the manual control on the left side of the steering column. If that sorta-kinda works set memory #1 to all the way up and all the way in then set memory #2 to all the way down down and all the way out. Then sit there and exercise the mechanics with the buttons.

If things do not get better then you have to either repair the drive cable(s) or clean/replace the position sensors.

Thanks for your help!

I cannot get the column to move at all.

Where are the position sensors?

Thanks again!
