New England rustproofing: how much do I need?
I've already had to repair two sheetmetal rust spots at a not-painless price. So looking forward to the New England winter, I got two wildly different quotes for Waxoyl rustproofing. A Land Rover specialist shop says that with prep work, it'll probably be up to $1,000 for a full undercoating, while a local German car specialist shop says it'll be closer to $300 to $400. Both are very reputable in their circles (Robison and European Car Doctors respectively), so it's not like I'm comparing shady and reputable. The German car shop did mention that they only use the black stuff on the bottom, while the LR shop's website (http://www.robisonservice.com/servicedep/waxoyl.asp) also includes mention of the clear fogging stuff; the extra supplies and labor involved probably make up the difference. Question is, seeing as I have a unibody Jag rather than a body-on-frame Land Rover, is the black stuff enough, or with my car's 10 years of northern winters, does it need that extra treatment?
