You can get the transmission itself (rebuilt) for about $2100, plan on at least $800 to install depending on the shop and what kind of deals you can manage. If you have a shop around there that specializes in BMWs or Jags, they might be willing to do a rebuild, that would be much cheaper. The 5HP24 was used in 97-02 540 and 740 models as well as the Jags so that might give you a few more options.

You have a few options. AAMCO quoted me approx $4K to rebuild mine out the door. Or you can go to http://www.car-part.com/ and see if you can find one here. I found a used gearbox for my '01 XJ8L with a 2 year full replacement and labor warranty for $1200.00 delivered. Another $850.00 and it was in the car and running. In this case you will need a few parts like a front seal, pan gasket and filter as well as some very expensive transmission fluid. You would be hard pressed to come up with a deal like that unless you have a few favors due.

Lastly, you could rebuild and reinstall yours for about $1K and the additional labor.

Keep in mind that the 1998 transmission was a stand alone year. The 99 and up models are different.

edo:
Please report back after a month or so to help people understand they do not have to give a dealer $6000 for a transmission for a 12 year old car.
