Default Nikasil

I have a 2000 XJR that needs rebuild; 160,000 miles on the clock. The cylinders are coated with nikasil and are in very good shape. Should I reuse this block as is, or try to obtain one with steel liners? Does this coating need any prep work done prior to assembly? I have many years of experience on iron block or steel sleeved engines. I'm just unsure about proper procedure on this type engine!

That's a good question and not personally knowing the answer, my first thought would be to check with a Merc or Porsche engine builder, since they are the ones with the most experience. I found this link of interest... Are Mercedes Benz and Porsche engines rebuildable? ...to me, it seems knowing about the process helps determine your approach to the situation.

As long as the cylinders are in good condition nothing is required. If the nikasil is eroded or damaged it can be replaced, but I believe that is much more expensive than buying another block. A nikasil lining in good condition is superior to steel. The MB/ Porsche article is not relevant.

RJ, is the nikasil just on the cylinder walls or is it also apart of the cylinder head? Also, did Jaguar use standard piston rings or are there specified ones for this?

It's just on the cylinder walls. I don't think special rings were required, but not sure.

I think the nikasil engine piston rings were LOW TENSION.
All the nikasi engines I disassembled had rings that were easily manipulated.

I had an engine with damaged nikasil bores and a machine shop pressed in steel liners for me.
I had to buy different piston rings for the later cast steel liner engines. Those rings were noticeably stiffer.
