Hi People

i am posting this on behalf of a friend who just bought a 1999 X308.

He took possession of it today, got it home, was going well but now can't start the car at all. We have ruled out flat battery and fuses. Tried the inertia switch to noe effect. Turn the key and the car makes a clicking noise starboard side (RHD car) but engione will not enage. Any feedback would be much appreciated, thanks, cheers

Assuming the battery is really fully charged, it sounds like the solenoid on the starter motor is on it's way out. Take a hammer or a long pole and hit the starter a few times to jar it, then try starting. If it works, then the starter solenoid needs to be changed out soon, and I mean within 2 to 3 more starts before it is really dead.
