Opinions on 2001 XJ8
I lost my 2004 Cadillac DeVille this week in a massive flood that innundated 50+ cars in a commuter parking lot.
I am looking to replace it with something comparable to the performance and features and have stumbled upon a 2001 XJ8 that appears to be in pristine condition and just over 65K miles for right around 9500 USD.
I drove it and fell in love with the power and the ride comfort, which was more powerful than the caddy and just as smooth a ride with much more responsive handling. My 9 year old son then added that "it was a proper saloon car with a big boot and lots of horses under the bonnet".........he is no longer allowed to watch Top Gear LOL.
I guess my question is what I can expect from this car from 65-100K miles, 100k + miles, I have had people tell me that the 4.0L is one of, if not the best V8 engines ever produced but that they have transmissions issues around 100K miles. Are there any things that I should look for prior to purchase on this model. Any thoughts good or bad would be appreciated.
Thanks

First, welcome to the forum
The particular model you mention has two known weak spots.
1. the transmission as you mention. consider ignoring the sealed for life mantra and changing the fluid.
2. the upper cam chain tensioners, unless it can be proven that they have been changed to the latest metal version, budget to change these immediately
In general the engine is sensitive to low coolant and low oil level. You cannot ignore the warning lights and drive on. If you see the light come on, pull over and call a tow truck. It will be much cheaper.
There is a pre-purchase inspection guide in the stickies at the top of the index page which will be useful to you.
BTW, the information you seek is more likely to be found in the section for your particular model ... the X308 section.

Oh, wow. You were parked at the Reston park-and-ride? Bummer. I hope your insurance covers the Caddy.
The XK8s of that vintage have the same engine and tranny, so you can go through that forum for advice, also.
Then, come to the Reston Town Center next weekend to ogle all the jags...

Yep it was parked in the lot on sunset hills, totally submerged. Finding out tomorrow what the payout is gonna be and ad soon as I know I have the 2001 XJ8 waiting on me. What is going on at the town center next weekend? If I have the XJ I will surely stop over there with my 9 year old son who is a car fanatic. Is there anything that I really need to know about it? It will be my first Jag.
Thanks everyone at X350 Forums , despite a different model you prove how friendly and helpful forums there are once again
Well, moved off to the "proper " area even to get more "proper" answers lol
Sorry to hear your lose but believe in me these jags are better built than that of fwd gm vehicles

Wow, I live in Reston too, and I often use that park and ride lot. I didn't that day, but I did run into a whole lot of closed roads and got home after 2 1/2 hours. I have an '01 VDP and I love it. The price seems a little high on that one, but it sounds like a nice car. You do need to keep on top of the usual issues. Mine is at 105K and running like new. I'm going to try to make it out there next weekend too.
