Default Pivot Bearings? Output Shaft Bearings??

Dear All,

All you boffins out there - help needed! When I was as the Jag dealership they told me that there was about a quarter inch of play in the back wheels which they said was acceptable. I'm not so sure - at 6 and 12 o'clock the wheels have play in them, but not 3 and 9. When I'm free wheeling I can certainly hear a slight grinding/dragging noise which worries me no end. Car has been like this for nearly a year now and as I now need new rear tires I'm thinking of getting whatever needs to be done fixed and out of the way.

Has this happened to any of ya??

As ever, advice greatly appreciated.

My only experience is of pivot bearings. One side went completely, now the other side is starting to go.
The symptoms are a wiggle as it goes over bumps, a clunk when you back up, and some tramlining. Given the loading of the springs, you can't always see the play in the pivot bearings. Look at the gaps between the swingarms and the upright, they should be the same front and rear.
The pivot bearings can be changed by yourself, if you're handy with tools.

Aha. I've lately been getting that clunk (also comes when cornering hard, especially under engine braking down a hill). I've had a feeling there's been some tramlining and a wiggle.

And I found some up-and-down movement at the right rear wheel today. Sounds like it's time for some pivot bearings...

A bit of up-and-down movement is normal. Side to side movement is pivot bearings.

Hmm. I've got every symptom except the side-to-side movement. I'll just have to drive it for a while till I can find out what's actually going on...
