Please excuse my ignorance, but is it possible to have an aircon unit refurb'd for fresh bearings? The car is a x type 2.2d sport, 2006. I've had a search on the forum but I can't find anything relevant. If this is possible, is it a diy job or does it need a professional service?

It is possible, but i would take it to a specialist. If you do it yourself, you need to get a new refrigerant and re-pressurize the system afterwards. This can be done only with a special equipment. Also refurbished aircon unit costs about 150-250€ (about 120-180£) so it might be cheaper to just buy a new one.
