Shifter sticks, delayed Indicators

Shifter sticks, delayed Indicators
Hi Guys,
I'm over on the XK8 forum all the time. A buddy of mine with a 2005 X type asked if I could give him a hand and showed me the problem.
The Shifter is hard to move, it's like someone poured really thick honey into it. Then when it does move, the indicator doesn't always move with the shifter. The shifter is in Park right now but the car is in reverse.
I don't know if you've seen this or it is a common problem, but I wanted to ask for help. The XK8's are shift by wire, there is no mechanical linkage besides the microswitches by the shifter itself. Is the X Type the same?
If this agrees with your coaching, I'd like to look inside the shift mechanism, how does one remove the wood surround?
I just noticed that unlike the XK8 these cars come in manual transmissions, this car has an automatic.
Well we sure appreciate any help you can provide. I'll keep an eye on this and give him a hand tomorrow.
Thanks,
John

Johnken: A single cable links the J Gate to the automatic transmission on an X-Type. You might try disconnecting the cable to see if the problem is the cable, the J Gate or the transmission.
In your other post on this topic, I sent a link with step-by-step pictures how to open the J Gate. When you open it, you'll see the mechanism just below the wood trim that detects the position of the stick, and displays what gear it's in.
If the J Gate mechanism is hosed and you need a replacement, send a note to dr dome, a member of this forum who parts out X-Types. Or here's a eBay offering: Transmission Selector Gear Hand Lever Automatic J Gate Jaguar x Type 2 5 3 0 | eBay
