2001 XJ8 w/premium sound (Alpine)
Hello all! Perhaps one of my fellow enthusiasts will send me in the right direction of repair or replacement of the subwoofer speaker in the back window/package tray? Is there something special about the speaker or is there a standard aftermarket replacement?

With the subwoofer setting in Audio/Mode set above 2, we get a distortion/crackling/unpleasant sound. Almost like some thing is loose rather than the buzz heard when a cone is broken.
In the old days I'd have said the speaker was bad, not necessarily the cone, but perhaps the electronics controlling it?

The presumption is that the speaker is not functioning correctly rather than a hole or crack in the cone. So far my search for a replacement speaker shows 'not available' from the multiple Jag parts suppliers. In fact it looks like all of them use the same software to list available parts. In this case the speaker is a "discontinued" part with no recommendations for a replacement aftermarket type. Is there something special about that rear deck speaker, that makes it irreplaceable??

I stopped into the local Hi-Fi Shop where the folks there basically snickered and laughed at me when I gave them the make of the car...'Jaguar.' Seriously though, these folks do almost anything mobile auio related from 4 wheeler and motor bike through RVs and hot rods. They've helped me with upgrading my Tahoe to blue tooth touch screens drivers and restoring one of my antique cars. To hear them say there was nothing available for my beloved Kitty is disheartening. They looked up Jaguar though their suppliers web sites and found nothing was being made for the older Jags.

So, do any of you have experience with finding the Alpine equivalent parts to keep this feature alive in the car? Helping me troubleshoot to see if it is the speaker or the electronics might help too.

 

The loudspeaker is a dual voice coil unit.

I just get the replacement part for the speaker surround foam and glue in the replacement. (Same kit for Harmon Kardon or Alpine)
