Default Prepping Used Transmission For Install

My 1999 XJ8 transmission bit the dust at almost 207,000 miles and I will be replacing it with a used one being pulled from a 2002 XJ8 with 146,000 miles.
A friend of mine will be doing the install and if you guys could advise on what to do prior to install it sure would be appreciated.
Thanks

Take disassembly pictures for possible reassembly issues.
I trust your going to drain the fluid and put in a new filter, so drain it before putting it in, albeit not much, but you'll save a few pounds.
Replace the rear and front seals.
Its very rare to have an issue with, but inspect the flywheel.
This guy is very knowledgeable and thorough with about any trans. Here's a list of vids for the ZF5HP trans to reivew... https://www.youtube.com/c/GaryFerrar...ry=zf%205hp%20

I ALWAYS replace the forward drum ('A'drum) while the gearbox is out.

I have a small steel 'grease-barrel' that holds the gearbox VERTICAL while I work on the drums.

I buy a large sheet of gasket material and cut a new gasket for the 'pump-to-gearbox' mating surface. (leave the bolts for the pump-to-bellhousing alone to keep the parts together) You can buy the gasket/seal set but the last time I bought one it was $175 and all I needed were a few parts.

Good price on the fluid is AMAZON
Amazon Amazon

or eBay

Might as well replace the pan gasket and filter too.

Will 5.29 US Quarts of Febi 29738 Fluid be enough for my fluid and filter change.

The gearbox holds 10 liters empty. You can drain out more than 5 liters so I would not count on 5 liters being enough.
Six or more would be a safe amount.
You could get a 5 liter and a few single liters?

What is involved in replacing the A drum, is it just a snap ring and pull out and slide back in kind of thing or what.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hey Bob, would it behoove him to replace the rear main seal since the trans is out?
