I found the "hook" below in the bottom of my tank while dismantling to fix the EVAP flange.

How exactly does the fuel level sending unit base plate (plastic) fit into the tank and where/what direction does the "hook" go? I see where it snaps in but I am not sure of the orientation.

Oh, and what purpose does this "hook" serve? Looks like maybe it just keeps the wires out of the way of the float level arm.
