Had my check engine light come on today...

is there any way to get the codes by turning on-off three times or something ?

Or do i need to buy the obd tool.

You need a code reader. Here in the US, most autoparts shops (autozone/pepboys) will read the codes for free.

I bought a cheap 39.99 reader from one of these places and it works fine for the Pxxxx codes, one or more of which is why your Check Engine Light is on. I leave it in the trunk just incase something happens while I'm out on the road

Wouldn't you want to know what the ECU thinks is wrong? I would buy a tool to check it, they are cheap enough, and can save you a fortune.

thanks... the xj40 I had before would display any codes when you turned the key to the on position three times...was pretty practical.

I guess its time to buy the tool...
