Quick tech question ???

Hi everyone,
I have a bit of a problem with an X308
She's a W-Reg XJ Exec 3.2Litre V8
I had about a 100 mile journet today and on the way home the Engine Warning light came on.
It's an orange light shaped like an engine on the Rev Counter.
I pulled over and turned her off and quickly referenced the handbook, which to be honest wasn't much help. All it said was that the light should go off when the engine starts and if it doesn't investigate.......
Well I had good oil pressure and it wasn't getting hot when it was idling in the layby. It wasn't rattling, missing, smoking.....Infact everything seemed fine.
So I drove home (taking it easy of course)
So what could be wrong?
What is this light linked to problem wise?
Can I cancel it somehow?
Should I invest in one of these OBD thingamyjigs?
Thanks for any help guys........
Gibbo.

You should read the codes. Here in the US, most auto parts chains will do so for free. If you want, yes get one on those "OBD thingamyjigs". Literally hundreds of things light the CEL (check engine light).
