Radio/ phone query
This morning I started my XJ8 and instead of my radio coming on the screen showed my phone ( Car phone fitted in armrest). I then realised later on that although I had switched off the car the light on the phone was on ... so unplugged phone.
How do I reset so I can have my radio back
Any clues would be greatly appreciated
cheers
Richard

Hi Richard
In the wiring between the phone and the stereo headunit there is a wire which is usually referred to as the mute wire. When the phone needs to take control of the stereo (when you have an incoming call for instance) this wire is grounded by the phone. The stereo sees this wire going to ground and switches into phone mode (You see "Phone" on the screen)
Your symptom sounds like the phone has got confused and it holding this mute wire at ground. You mentioned you "unplugged the phone"...... do you mean just the handset ? This may not be enough to get the phone to let go of the mute wire.
I would pull the 2 phone fuses and see if the radio comes back on.
Phone Fuses : (for 2000 car, you didn't mention what years yours is....... if you have the owners manual check for the fuse numbers in there)
Trunk fuse box #22 (5A) Permanent 12V and #4 (5A) Ignition 12V
The other outside possibility is that the mute wire has physically shorted to ground, but I would try the fuses first......

Sorry for the delay my computer went down
Your suggestion has worked. I took the fuses out and the radio worked. I then put the fuses back in 2 days later and to my surprise radio still worked
Thank you very much for your swift response it was much appreciated

@Richard
Good news ! I am assuming you don't actually use the phone ? (Because it's a very old system that is difficult to get carriers to support nowadays).... anyway, if you want to use this mute wire in a constructive way to enable a bluetooth phone system into the car, check out this post....
