Remote problems

After checking the igintion switch, I noticed that there was no flap. I read about putting a couple of drops of oil on the key and wiggling for a while.Lo and behold, a flap popped out. I had the driver's side door open, and when the flap popped out, the chime stopped. I got out and pushed the lock on the remote, and it worked !!! Thanks so much. This was driving me crazy.

no it means there is something staying open on the car .. close each door and try again. and if that doesn't work make sure trunk and ignition barrel flap are closed.

Hi All,
I'm having a similarproblem which occurs every couple of months. I unlocked my 2000 XJ8 on Monday using the fob got into cabin and car is dead. There are no displays on dash (before I put the key in the ignition i.e.mileage), put key in ignition and turn - nothing no lights, info or crank.
I found this thread so this morning I noticed there was no "clunk" when I took the key out of the ignition and seen the flap wasnt closing. I used lube and now the flapcloses when I take the key out (although there is a small gap at the top (about 1mm).
I've opened and closed all doors, boot (trunk) and bonnet.
Still car is dead. I can't lock the car with the fob.
I don't know how but I can get an alarm of some sort when I play with locking/unlocking the drivers door with the key and then pressing "unlock" on the fob stops the alarm, so I'm sure the fob itself is ok.
As I said this happens every couple fo months and somehowI've resolved it by pure luck I think (previously by slamming boot or playing with key in the ignition).
I've been without my mistress for 3 days now and she is driving me bloody crazy. I just want her to be morelike a wife.
Please help!
Many thanks in advance

Thank you, I will look at that when I get home tonight (had to go to work!)
Couple of extrainfo points:
When I initially opend the car with the fob, the doors unlocked but the boot could only be opened with the key and not using the button on the trunk/boot
The clock is still working
Not sure if that helps.
Ta,
