Default Scan tool / Code reader

Does anyone have any experiences with the various knockoff code readers available on the internet? I've heard really positive feedback on some of the GM ones and it seems like it would be a useful thing to have for the Jag. The knockoff Tech2s fetch around $300 versus the $3000 the real ones get, same seems to be true of Ford-era Jaguar ones. Obviously they are not a good solution to a new car where new/updated software will make them obsolete, but as a one time investment on an old, static model it seems useful...

Auto Enginuity with the Jaguar enhancement does everything. Set up was a little difficult, but there tech support got me going.

I suppose I should have been more specific... I'm not looking for an OBDII tool, I'm looking for a tool that replicates the factory tool functionality - programming keys, modules, etc. I'm looking at a knockoff VCM IDS tool.

Try a search on the forum for 'cloned dealer scan tool', there is a big thread about that very topic.

Auto Enginuity sells a reprogrammer as well. I don't have experience with it.

Yeah, but that's $1100 plus a subscription. I'm talking about ~$300 tools. Once you get over a grand, you have access to a wide variety of universal tools like Launch or Genisys. I'd really prefer to keep this in the three digit arena. And, from research I've done on other cars (Saab, Audi, Volvo, mostly) the universal tools are never 100% substitutes for the factory tools... or even cheap Chinese knockoffs of the factory tools.
