I have a 2003 X Type which I have owned since new. The car has given me 80,000 relatively trouble free service. Problems seem to develop when the battery is failing. I have replaced two batteries over the years. The first time, in 2010, the car would crank freely and seemingly normally but not start. The second time, in 2015, I got the yellow service engine light along with the red light. A code reader produced some indecisive codes. In each instance a new battery cured the problem. It's not actually unreasonable to have batteries fail after as long as they served you. In fact, I think you did pretty well getting 7 years out of the first one and 5 years out of the second one.
