Default See you on the other side......

Just a quick note to say thanks for the great help I've got from this board over the past few years of X308 ownership. I was sad to see my '00 XJR go when I sold it last week. This board was invaluable for the few of us that played around and finally got a true aux-in by hacking various parts of the car up :-) It was also a great source for finding out the real story about the timing chain tensioners, and the various other things that came up during my 4 years of XJR ownership.

I thought I'd share some numbers to add another data point to the eternal question of "Is a Jag expensive to own and run" ?

While preparing the XJR for sale, I went through all of my old invoices and was amazed to find so few........ I had the car serviced every 10k miles. Typically I needed brake pads and/or discs, but so would any car. I had all of the belts changed, including the supercharger belt at 100k. I had the plugs changed at 120k. Recently (last 6 months) it went in twice, first time for a water leak that turned out to be a $12 plastic pipe towards the back of the engine, and lastly for an oil leak from the transmission cooler that turned out to be a damaged hose. Total invoice costs was <$5k. It also went through 2 sets of tires at probably ~$700 per set

I owned the car for 4 years and put 46k miles on it, taking it from 80k miles to 126k miles. The depreciation on the car was $5k........$5k !!! I'd lose that on a Ford Focus if I bought it new and drove it off the lot (probably)

Total ownership MPG was 16 (US gallons). This was due to my commute, where I spend a lot of time stationary. This could go up to 22MPG on a run.

Highlight of the ownership experience was seeing it parked by the valet in the front circle of a very prestigious hotel in San Francisco (while Ferraris and Lambos were shuffled round the back)

Lowlight was annoying period of a few days in extreme heat where the car went into failsafe engine mode constantly (Never found the root cause of this..... it just went away)

So, what do you buy to replace an X308 XJR....... ?

Below is an action shot of the new car.......let's see how many true anoraks we have here...... :-)

I'll keep looking in on this forum from time to time. Hope you guys are all well.

Take care, Scott

I would say it's said when someone is selling his beloved car after so many years of care - but in your case I really believe it's for good, because as much as I can see this is another Jag you're going to have

I hope the owner will keep on with the care about your XJR... because those cars do have their own temper - if you care for your cat it will care for you on the road

I reckon it could possibly be a X350 Super V8?

Do I win a prize if I'm right?

@Stu

Close...... it's actually a 2006 Super V8 Portfolio. One of 145 in the US. Had to go all the way from West Coast to East Coast to get it. In fact the car I bought was the first Portfolio I'd ever seen. After 1 week of ownership I have to say I love it. I don't think it's fair to compare it with the XJR though......as the price and expectations are completely different. I'll get pictures posted soon.

Take care

Scott

In the UK they were badged as Daimlers and called super V8s. They are very nice inside, kitted out to the max. I look forward to seeing some snaps, enjoy it!
