Default split link camchains????

hi, as mentioned in an earlier thread my xj8 executive, 2000 model, 57000 miles developed a top end rattle the mechanic has had a look today and has said that it's not the tensioners but that the smaller of the camchains has stretched.

there are now two options i'm told one of which involves a split link chain.

has anyone had any dealings with split link chains or can you tell me if there is such a thing and if there is where to purchase one.

any help is once again appreciated.

all the best, rod.

I have seen them on eBay, but I think it was part of a kit. I think that stretched cam chains are not very common. If you are replacing the secondary chains (shorter ones) I would replace the tensioners too while you are in there. I don't know if the 3.2 have variable valve timing (VVT), but in any event, be careful of the valve timing.

Dunno about the Jag ones but Ford used split link timing chains back when I was tuning em. They are fine up to a point but used to let go @ 7200 rpm (not thats a problem with the v8's rpm) but they probably make em of sterner stuff these days.

I would be very sceptical that such a short chain has "stretched". The tensioners could surely take up more than the amount it could stretch? jmho!

There is a current thread discussing the installation of the normal secondary chain by slipping it in from the rear of the intake cam. Perhaps you could have a look and consider that route.

I am running secondary chains with master links and getting close to 10k miles on them with no problem. I found a secondary chain/tension kit on Ebay with masterlinks for those trying to avoid pulling the front cover, etc.

There is a proper direction to orient the clips on the masterlinks so beware of that detail. It should be part of the instructions in the kit.

Don't drop anything down in the you know where!

Default Master Link chain

I just installed mine. Ordered it from

JAGUAR 4.0LV-8 UPPER TIMING CHAIN ,WITH MASTER LINK

It's $59.59 part number EAZ1286

I will do a detailed write up on my own post "Tensioner, my turn" early next week. You will need to lock down your cams and flywheel to take off the exhaust cam sprocket. I used a grinder to take off the old chain.

By 'old one' I assume you meant chain, not sprocket.

If there isn't an "I used a grinder to fix my Jaguar" t-shirt, there should be.

Plumsauce -
Which is the current thread you are referring to?

hflavell -
When you ground off the old chain, how did you keep the metal bits from flying into the works and potentially causing mayhem?

Thx!

Default Grinding the secondary chain

I will update my other post with pictures when I get time but the engine bay was covered with towels and a wash cloth stuffed into the timing chain area. Nothing but the chain was exposed.

Ok updated, here is a photo. I used my special tool I made to hold the exhaust cam sprocket as a stop for the grinder (served lots of purposes). The tool used to be used to install pergo laminated flooring.

Just as an aside.

Years ago I bought a tool for pushing out the pins from a continous chain they work really well and cost next to nothing! ( I think originally it was designed for a motorbike)

love the T shirt Idea!
