Steering colum reach mechanism
Dear Jaguar Enthusiasts,
I have three questions regarding the failed steering colum reach mechanism in my XJR:
1. What damage to components is expected based on the following: The reach function became intermittent and finally stopped completely, but I could hear the motor clicking when actuating the switch (something must have seized). At some point the cable seemed to have broken and I could hear the motor run with a grinding ("cash register") noise when actuating the switch. During all this the steering colum could not be moved in/out by hand (gears hopefully ok).
2. I am trying to determine whether it is possible to repair the reach mechanism without removing the airbag. My reading of the various postings seem to indicate that some members have been able to do so.
3. I was able to replace the reach cable in my XKR with some effort based on the excellent description by Ken P. Chalfant. Is there a similarly detailed description for the XJR?
Thanks, SP
