Went for short drive to accumulated more miles on the Trans.Fluid additive. The Column Reach failed to extend. Tilt is good. Tried the manual switch and the Reach motor runs but nothing moves. Unable to pull Steering Wheel out since it is retracted close to dash. Since the motor runs, it must be the short reach cable that fails. Seems like a PIA access job. The details I've located here are kinda sketchy. Guess I will try the E-Bay seller over in Ga. The info I found indicated the part is JL012197 for all XK8's. BTY, The Squawk is practically gone, but I can floor it and no noise at all. Only after it shifts up 55 MPH and I kick down does it makes a slight noise. What is suggestion on the Reach Cable?

 

Kelly, can't help with the steering but I can send you a brick to put under the accelerator pedal. LOL

Thanks for reply and link. I have viewed various methods and ways to access the Reach Motor. Maybe try a Hy bride
(my way) and remove steering wheel.drop column down , lower cowling and attempt that way. Have ordered the cable only from E Bay vendor who supplies other shops. Only question is does the motor have a internal stop and how to set it. The other instructions involve DVOM and checking them. The reach is all the way in and cannot move any further in. . Guess I will try and report back on how I best could gain access. Thanks again.

 

Update, since the Tilt works and the Reach or Telescope only buzzes, clicks & does not move, i have ordered the Cable Replacement from E bay Vendor in Georgia. . Corresponded and and the cable only is part # JLM12187 ($35) The Motor and Cable assembly JLM12189 (MUCH $) .Cable only is patterned after the OEM unit and he supplies various Name Vendors. Will advise once we have repairs and Reach is working properly.

We have the S.R.M (Str. Reach Mtr) removed from the column. Checked the Pot. wires (blue & Blue/White) on the end and got .69 ohms on 20k scale..The retract button was at full retract and stalled, cable chewed. It now appears we are ready for install of the new drive cable. Also seeking confirmation of the motor drive directions. Appears the Retract is CCW rotation and Extend is CW rotation. Will some one confirm or provide the correct direction of travel of motor and cable since the drive unit faces the steering wheel when installed? Like 3 Stooges, SLOWLY WE MOVE Step by Step.

 

Install the short cable and turn the column 'screw' to determine the direction.
You should also move the REACH a half turn off the 'bottom' so the motor stops before the mechanical stop is reached.
You will cause the new cable to fail if the motor continues to drive when the column reaches the end.
