Default Steering Wheel Colors

Greetings,

I have a question regarding steering wheel colors. My steering wheel is in very bad condition and I would like to replace it.

My car is 2001 XJ8 Base with Carnival Red ext. and with the XDZ Cashmere trim color.

As we know, there are different colors on the dashboard top, dashboard sides, etc. so it is a little hard for me to figure out just what color the steering wheel is.

Is the steering wheel and air bag also Cashmere? Or is is something more standard like Oatmeal AGE so Jaguar did not have to make so many different colored wheels and air bags? Just like they did with the dash tops.

This site shows some color and you can see how some of them look almost the same.

Thanks!

I did some research (on this forum), and I found the chart that someone posted long time ago, that gives all possible color combinations for Jaguar. I can't find the chart now (no time), try to search for it.

My 98 VDP is Topaz with Ivory leather, and Sable steering wheel, carpet, top of the dash, top of the door panels, piping on the seats, seatbelts, and as of recently, Sable center console armrest (without the cup holder). The headliner is Cashmere.

This is what I am talking about! It's like they gave the color for the "main" ??? interior color but to cut corners, etc. they made all the dashtops Sable, or Oatmeal, or whatever.

I am interested to see if someone else chimes in on this.

My deal is that I can find new (or almost new) steering wheels but they don't come with the air bag so . . . . . I don't have problems with the steering wheel airbag being a diff color from other interior "parts" but those two together must match.

Thanks Mike,

Boy, Jaguar sure did make it complicated! I love that there are about 5 shades of "tan."

I'm still wondering if the "tan" of my steering wheel is a different color than the airbag -- I got a nice, used wheel (wanted wood like in the VDP) and used my airbag from the all-leather wheel -- can't really tell if it's just a tad different or if it's a "dye lot" issue or what, but it's not a perfect match. Maybe I'm too picky!

This is definitely dye lot issue. If it bothers you (I know it would bother me!), take it to any upholstery shop (but you have to remove the wheel), and they can dye it in the matching shade of any color for 30-50 bucks. If you feel up to playing with it, you can buy the dye, and DIY (pretty simple to do).

It's hard to tell in a picture. It looks like the top of your dash is sable so that is what color your wheel and airbag should be.

On the wood steering wheel issue. Does the VDP not have a totally different wood type/color than the rest of the XJ's?

And what are the colors called. I think mine is something walnut or walnut something.

The wood on the wheel seems to match the wood on the dash perfectly, no problems there. The leather on the wheel is very close to the color of the leather on the dash and the airbag, just not perfect. It could be dye lot or age/usage. I'm not at all concerned that the wheel doesn't look like it belongs to this car -- but I will be touching up the leather when I get a chance to buy a dye kit, then the wheel should look like new!

There are less Steering Wheel / Airbag colour combinations than there are main trim options but it's still a lot!

Unless the original purchaser specified differently, the leather on the Steering Wheel and the Airbag will be the same colour.

Options listed in the Parts Manual for the US and Canada X308 Steering Wheels and Airbags are:

Antelope - AGE
Pine - HFY
Sable - AEK
Slate - LFK
Warm Charcoal - LEG

These are the basic colours and then there's further style options for perforated leather and combination leather/walnut Steering Wheels.

To Mike and others: I have seen lots of pics on this forum of the color code on the back of the steering wheel. I thought that this may help clarify where to look for the color of the airbag:

I've never taken my airbag off, I had the airbag from my original wheel taken off and put on the "new" wheel and installed in the car by a shop. Is it easy and safe to take off?

It is a explosive device, so you have to take the proper precautions.

Yes, I understand that. I did remove and replace a steering wheel with an airbag many years ago, but I just don't remember the procedure. Is there a step-by-step on this site?

I read on another thread on this forum recently about a guy doing the whole thing, removing first the air bag and then the steering wheel - then replacing new wheel and original bag in 10 minutes and he did not even disconnect the battery. Sean B. made the comment that was not sure if that was the proper way! LOL.

I remember reading that one, too. Probably not the safest way to do it!

Default Air Bag Removal

Make sure you disconnect the negative battery terminal.
