It sounds like your old diff has a few cracked and/or sheared teeth....whether it be on the yoke, ...drive gear or both. But in any case, you are correct, you were on borrowed time, good catch Erasmo and I concur with CK, that looks rather sharp. That was a lot of elbow grease.
