Default Tail lights inoperative when headlights on

Just picked up a 2001 XJ8. Car is clean, but a couple of issues that I could use some help on. First the tail lights operate when the parking lights are on but they do not function when the headlights are on. Also the headlights do not function on auto.

When driving some times the display will read check brake lights.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

First, check the bulbs to be sure they are in correctly with clean connections. Check the grounds in the trunk.

But it sounds like you might have a broken solder joint (s) in the multifunction switch. Lots of threads on removing the steering wheel and the switch. You will need the wiring diagram (stickies) to trace the wiring.

If the check brake light displays comes on while braking, you might need to renew the Security Locking and Control Module (SLCM), it is under the boot fuse box, make sure it is dry there.

Default Fixed Running Lights

Turned out it was a bad SLCM. Replaced it and they now work. Unfortunately the auto headlights are still not functioning. Any suggestions on that would be appreciated.

Takes about ten minutes to remove the steering wheel and airbag: then you need to look for a broken wire that connects to the auto function. The wiring diagram will tell you which wire (by color) and which post. Soldering is a trial of patience and steady hands (you will need three! I used locking forceps for the surgery). Or, buy one off Ebay.
