Is there a definitive way to test if the shocks need replacing?
My mobile mechanic couldn't remove the rear shock bolt, despite a concerted effort by his pneumatic wrench and breaker bar. Poor guy... his eyeballs nearly popped out of his skull trying.
So... before paying possibly a big bill to have some shop mess with it, I'm wondering if there's some way (other than looking for leaks) to TEST for bad shocks.
Years ago I remember we used to push down on the car a few times, then release... and if it bounced more than X times, the shocks were bad. I don't know how accurate this is, esp with a Jag.
Nothing about the ride particularly indicates the shocks are bad. I just bought them because I was on a roll replacing things that seemed logical to replace after 76k miles.
Can someone shed some light? The shocks are sitting in my trunk. Perhaps it's not worth changing them out.
Thanks,
SirJag
