Default Timing Chains Forum Threads & Tech Info

Hi
The timing chains and timing chain tensioners are a continuing issue for all these XJ & XK models that have not installed the 3rd revision tensioners.

There is a lot of information on the forum about these timing chains tensioners.
I have included 4 sources of information:
1- forum thread that describes using zip-ties instead of the lock-down tool to secure the cams
2- Secondary Timing Chain Tensioners PDF file extract from JTIS21
3- forum thread that gives instructions on camshaft timing
4- DIY PDF on changing the secondary and primary timing chain tensioners

Forum thread on Zip-tie method on secure the cams (see post# 8 by forum member David N)

Secondary Timing Chain Tensioner PDF file Extract from JTIS21
I extracted the Secondary Timing Chain Tensioners (Left Hand side of engine) Removal & Install information from the JTIS21 Shop Repair Manual.
Here is the PDF file:

1998 XJ8 2ndary Timing Chain Tensioner LH R&I.pdf

I am not sure that the JTIS21 fully describes the align of the camshafts flats as well as the DIY PDF below.
The Diy PDF (see blackonyx.net tech) on pages 33 to 35 says:

Rotate the crankshaft (with the pulley securing bolt) until a triangular arrow on the driver plate is seen through the access hole. You will also notice that the flat surface on the camshafts is now at (or near) the top of the engine.

Also says:
You may have to align the cams to get the tool (Camshaft locking tool) on. The two flat spots behind the from bearing cap on the cam should be mostly parallel to the surface of the head. Also one may be more so out of alignment than the other.

Forum thread that gives instructions on camshaft timing
Here is forum thread that you should look at (see posting# 10 by forum member Sean B):

Also the other postings in the thread.

DIY PDF on changing the secondary and primary timing chain tensioners
I created this 68 page PDF from a writeup on blackonyx.net - tech timing chain). It has step by step instructions and photos:
