1998 vdp, last week it started up fine and pulled along in the garage for about 100 feet. Then it kind of lurched and stopped; no failsafe or limp lights on. Th engine was idling (I was giving it no gas) but there was no ford motion and it seemed seized.

I shut the engine off for 5 minutes then started it again. It shifted into 1st gear just fine then lurched a few times then there was a whirring sound; after a few minutes (100 yards in 1st gear) it smoothed out. Drove it up to speed without any other issues.

This has happened daily since then. Only in 1st gear or reverse a couple of times (not consistently). Before this started happening, there seemed to be some brief intermittent slippage in 2nd gear.

Is this a service? A rebuild? The drum crack I have read about? Or something else entirely?

The car has 57k miles... what should this cost?

Hopefully a more qualified person will jump in here, but it sure does sound like the A-Drum issue you are referring to.
