Default trans fluid

I have a 98 xj8 that i am in the middle of rebuilding thanks to the popular drum snapping, but had some questions pertaining to the fluid. What i have been able to find out is that the Esso LT71141 fluid reccommended is REALLY expensive. There is the Pentosin AFT-1 which according to the distributor here in the US is supposedly the "Same" fluid just packaged under a different name. wondering is anyone else may know something and whether or not this would be a good fluid to put back in? the local Napa sells the Pentosin for 14.95 a liter.

Pentosin ATF1 is a ZF approved lubricant for the 5hp24 transmission. Here is a link to the ZF lubricants list for cars.

German auto parts has the Pentosin for $11.75/liter (www.germanautoparts.com)

I am planning to change my trans filter and fluid soon and am going to use Mobil 1 synthetic. I emailed Exxon/Mobil about a substitute for Esso LT 71141 and they recommended using Mobil One. They said it is completely compatible and can be mixed with the LT 71141 with no problems. Mobil 1 ATF is less than $6/qt. at Walmart.

There have been lots of BMW owners who have used Mobil 1, Amsoil, Valvoline Max-Life, and Castrol Import Multi-vehicle ATF in their E38 (740 series) cars. The E38 also uses the ZF5hp24 transmission. Have a look at the BMW forums for more info.

Regards,

Terry

We sell it for $12.14 a quart. BG brand. I don't know about the others you mentioned. We have used this in our shop without problem.

Default I don't know about the Mobil 1

I have owned the BMW 740, and have monitored the BMW Board for about 7 years. Never have I heard of anyone successfully using the Mobil1 ATF as it is a Full Synthetic with slightly different properties from the LT 71141. If I was going to do a Filter and fluid, I would use the Filtran Filter with Castrol Import Multi Vehicle ATF. If you have a letter from Mobil, it would be interesting to read.

I didn't write a letter to ExxonMobil, Ifilled out the contact form on the ExxonMobil website. I asked if I could use Mobil 1 Synthetic in my XJ8, and if there would be any problem mixing with the LT 71141. Here is the reply I received from them.
_______________
Yes, it can be mixed with existing fluid. Just make sure that you have
the new formulation of the product that states that it will meet your
vehicle requirement. Mobil product will meet and/or exceed your
requirements.

Thank you for choosing ExxonMobil products.
If you need further assistance, please contact ExxonMobil at 1-800-ASK-MOBIL

MJ

So this reply is from the same manufacturer as the Esso LT 71141. Wouldn't it seem reasonable that they would know if their products are compatible?

Terry
