Default Transmission

Hey, Folks!
2001 XJ8. trans feels like it goes in gear but doesn't go forward. Race the engine and it'll slam in gear and go but I think it's in a higher gear. Goes in reverse fine. "Transmission fault" lights up on dash, along w/engine light. Acts like low fluid in US tranny's.
Any suggestions out there?

Thanx.

Do a search for A drum, or 5HP24, and you'll finds tons of information. Mine did exactly as yours does, and it was a bearing failure and o ring failure.
They can be repaired by an enthusiastic home mechanic, or you can get shop to do it. The ZF manual is readily available, and parts are easy to get as well.
This is my thread, there's many more- https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-bmw-x5-66718/

I just did it last Friday- Maybe 1 hour total after the trans was out of the car. I had the guy who sold me the A-Drum switch A-drum parts (new O-ring needed) and am Glad I did, it looked a bit tricky, but the rest was very simple. I used av's thread as a guide as well. Is shifting and running smoothly and all is well. $235 all-in sure beats $1300-$2800.

Now if the motor just hadn't gone the car would have been so much cheaper..
