Default Transmission - only Reverse available .....?

My Jag. is a 2002 XJ8...it will start and goes into reverse only, when I try to go forward it just moves very slowly..does anyone know what it could be.???
I took it to a mechanic that repairs transmissions and, they want over $400.00 for them to remove transmission and they say it might be broken..

The code says gear box fault..

I put a brand new battery in it and, I want someone to help me here, since you all know about cars, about Jaguars and, this is my dream car...everyone says it is junk.

Hello,
What happens if you put it down in 1? If it moves well there, and also in reverse, then your front clutch pack is probably reduced to a stack of metal shims with little or no fiber on the any of the discs. (this is why they're called Clutch Discs)

If this is the case you're probably looking at a complete overhaul, because by now metal shavings from the fiberless discs (riding metal on metal) will have circulated throughout the system, doing harm to all sealing surfaces. If that happened to my transmission I would Immediately suspect this.

It might be more cost effective to put in a rebuilt transmission that comes with some sort of guarantee rather than have this one rebuilt.

I hope I'm wrong for your sake, and if I am, someone will be along shortly to give you a more correct diagnosis. Certainly our Xj8 section will be able to help you; someone will direct you there before long.

Welcome to the forums from ElimorB.

Welcome.

A quick browse of the XJ8 (X308) section will reveal some answers.

That ZF trans is a "sealed for life" unit, which causes all sorts of drama. The fluid still requires changing at about the 80K kms mark.

That trans also had component issues, but that was the real early units (from memory), and I thought the 2002 year had it sorted, maybe not.

The car is NOT junk.

A transmission rebuild with the updated componnents, and then fluid refresh from time to time will see the car out.

One in our group here has over 300K kms and is as made (he bought it new), no updates as yet. It is a 2001, and he takes good care of the servicing, and it obviously pays off.

You look to have been having transmission issues for several months and have posted about it on both XK8/XKR and X308 forums.

I've moved your post to X308 forum and changed the title from XJ8 to Transmission - only Reverse available .....? to attract attention to the issue.

Prepare yourself for a transmission rebuild. Unless its very low on fluid then a fluid change alone is not going to fix this.

Graham

The code says gear box fault..

Hi elic9,

Very sorry to hear about your transmission issues.

It will help us help you if you can please post the exact Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) that were scanned from your car. Most of the codes that may be caused by a gearbox fault can also be caused by malfunctions in other components or electrical circuits, but without knowing the exact codes we can only guess.

As others have already noted, low transmission fluid is one definite possibility that must be ruled out, although if you've driven the car much with the fluid too low there may be internal damage in the gearbox.

A less ominous possibility is the cable that connects the gear shift lever in the console to the actuating lever on the left side of the transmission. The cables have been known to stretch over time, throwing off the gear selection calibration. The screws that secure the cable bracket to the side of the transmission have also been known to come loose, and at least one owner reported that his bracket was hanging loose.

Another possibility is the electrical connector at the transmission, which can leak and become contaminated with transmission fluid, which interferes with the communication between the Transmission Control Module and the transmission.

A good shop that specializes in European (especially German) cars may be able to help you. The ZF 5HP24 transmission used in your car was also used in Audis and BMWs, and similar transmissions were used in Porsches and Volkswagons.

Cheers,

Don

Default I have car in shop..

I had a new transmission put in the Jag. it is still in the shop..it is ready but I am not ready to take it out yet..

$4183.00 is the total price and, I think it is too much but, they have to keep it till I pay them and, we made agreement for me to make payments.

Thank you for the happy birthday greetings..
