Hello
The removal and install by our indy mechanic took 8.5 hours. He charged us $550. After he cleaned out the lines with compressed air after he removed the transmission.

The rebuilding of our transmission was $2250 (wholesale pricing) at Erickson Industries. After the reinstall 3 extra liters of ATF were purchased at the VW parts dept ($60). Total cost was $3043 with tax.

The Rebuild included refurnishing the torque converter and replacing hard parts (forward drum, freewheel, valve body main pressure regulator, valve body other plate, spag).

Thanks Jim. That's a much more believable pricing. I'm in MA so maybe when/if mine goes, I'll have to find out where your mechanic is.

The solution in my case sounds quite appalling alongside so many well-reasoned scenarios - and I offer it only to those who might resign to sell their beloved car faced with the cost of a proper gearbox replacement - but for $875 my cracked drum was refitted with new plates and seals and then the drum lip and retaining ring were welded together as one. My drum failed relatively intact, making it a good candidate for this procedure. The $875 included labor, parts, fluid and filter change.

The results have been excellent for the last 2500 miles or so and I have a one year warranty against failure, with the cost credited toward drum replacement.

Default Reman Advice

Searching for the best reman. I own a '99 XJ8 with 38K miles. It has a transmission fault. The only code displayed is P1740. Thank you!

Hi Stephanie
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums
Looks like the DTC P1740 is an incorrect trouble code for your 1999 Jaguar XJ8 - ZF5HP24 transmission.
The P1740 does appear in the DTC Summaries PDF file.

Here is the PDF file: (click on the highlighted 5HP2499.PDF to open the PDF file)

5HP2499.PDF (Transmission: 5 HP 24 Transmission Control System – 1999 MY)

Look at pages 9 (bottom of page has P1739 listed) & page 10 (page starts with P1745).

You need to have someone with code scanner that will give you the correct trouble code. Most of the major auto parts stores such as Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, Pepboys, etc will do dtc scan for free.

Hope this helps
Jim Lombardi
